Lately when I’ve been driving around in the mornings or picking up the house in the afternoons, I’ve had these words in my head and thought I'd blog about it today."To dream the impossible dreamTo fight the unbeatable foeTo bear with unbearable sorrowTo run where the brave dare not go
To right the unrightable wrongTo love pure and chaste from afarTo try when your arms are too wearyTo reach the unreachable star
To fight for the rightWithout question or pauseTo be willing to march into HellFor a heavenly cause
And I know if I'll only be true To this glorious questThat my heart will lie peaceful and calmWhen I'm laid to my rest
And the world will be better for thisThat one man, scorned and covered with scarsStill strove with his last ounce of courageTo reach the unreachable star"
Of course they are being said with the voice of Peter O’Toole with absolute conviction and passion. If you don’t know what I’m talking about you need to go to your local video store and rent Man of La Mancha. This is a film that captured my heart the first time I saw it, and I’ve been having a love affair with it ever since. When I read these words it makes me realize how much we lack people in this world that possess conviction and values and courage.

One more quote from the movie that I absolutely LOVE. I think everyone should have something in their life that moves them to the very core of their being and makes them want to be a better person and change the world.
“I've been a soldier and a slave. I've seen my comrades fall in battle or die more slowly under the lash in Africa. I've held them in my arms at the final moment. These were men who saw life as it is, yet they died despairing. No glory, no brave last words, only their eyes, filled with confusion, questioning "Why?" I don't think they were wondering why they were dying, but why they had ever lived. When life itself seems lunatic, who knows where madness lies? To surrender dreams - -this may be madness; to seek treasure where there is only trash. Too much sanity may be madness! But maddest of all - -to see life as it is and not as it should be!”
Lovely, lovely! And here is a link if you want to listen to the song: http://www.reelclassics.com/Audio_Video/Music7q/manoflamancha_otoole_impossibledream.mp3

I'm so in love with this movie and with the book Don Quixote. Beautiful words, language. I would love to find the soundtrack for this. I wonder if it's even around somewhere. Thank you for reminding me of something I love...I think I'll have to Netflix this movie sometime soon. It seriously makes me cry.
I haven't seen that movie in forever -- it would be good to see it again. The music is great, I'm sure you could find it easily, Amy. One of my favorite paintings I saw in London was at the Courtauld Gallery and it was of Don Quixote and Sancho (is that his name?). I loved it!
I haven't seen this movie because I have issues with musicals (Amy can attest), but I love that quote you shared. I may have to break down and watch it!
I can just hear Peter saying those words and singing that song and oh, yes, I have the movie. I love that quote and love these connections with you. Cyn
